Work-Related Childcare Costs and Virginia Child Support

Childcare can be a significant expense, but a provider’s advertised price and a parent’s relevant childcare cost are not necessarily the same figure. This guide explains how to organise the employment-related childcare question before working through Virginia child-support instructions.

Describe the care and the work connection

Keep the provider’s invoices or contract, payment records and the work schedule relevant to the care. Record which child attended, the dates covered and whether the charge is weekly, monthly, seasonal or a separate fee. Avoid mixing unrelated periods into one total.

A useful summary distinguishes a recurring charge from occasional care. If a charge covers several children, retain the provider’s breakdown or mark the allocation as unresolved instead of silently assigning it all to one child.

Use the statutory childcare provision

Section 20-108.2(F) addresses employment-related childcare in the guidelines. Its rules and the current official worksheet—not a generic online budget—govern the calculation. Whether a particular expense fits the provision may require review of the work connection, actual cost and other relevant circumstances.

Do not assume every camp, activity or babysitting expense receives the same treatment. Keep a disputed charge visible with a short explanation of what it covers and why it is being proposed.

Reconcile charges, assistance and payment records

Identify any discount, subsidy, reimbursement or change in attendance. Keep the original charge and the amount actually paid distinguishable. Ask how the current instructions treat any assistance rather than counting the same cost twice.

For example, a school-year invoice and a summer invoice can reflect different schedules. A dated table showing the period, hours, charge, assistance and payment can be more useful than a single annual estimate with no explanation.

Do not change support privately because a bill changed

An existing order and a new childcare bill are separate documents. Ask whether a review or court/agency action is needed when costs materially change. A parent should not assume that a private recalculation replaces the operative support order.

This website does not collect childcare invoices, decide eligibility for a subsidy or calculate support. Use the records to ask focused questions of the court, agency or a lawyer, and check the current instructions before submitting a worksheet.
